It has been announced that a historic championship is set to be revived in August!

NWA have announced plans to bring back the United States Tag Team Titles at NWA 74. The new champions will be crowned on night two of the event on August 28th.

A ten-team Battle Royale will be held to decide the new champions. The bout will feature “several worthy contenders” who will be announced at a later date.

In a press release confirming the news, promotion owner Billy Corgan said that it was an honour to be able to bring back such a historic title.

β€œIt’s an honor to be able to bring back the NWA United States Tag Team Championships,”

Our tag team division is red hot and full of deserving athletes who will now have a chance to make history in this sport. We are also looking at top tier tag teams outside the NWA which could also have an opportunity to compete for the new U.S. tag titles,”

Throughout history there have been several versions of the United States Titles dating back to the creation of the National Wrestling Alliance in 1948. The first titles under the United States banner were created in 1950. As part of the organisation’s rules each territory was allowed to create their own versions of the title.

The most famous version of the title would eventually become tied to Jim Crockett Promotions and as a result, WCW. During this period, the Midnight Express guided by Jim Cornette held the titles for more than 500 days across three reigns.

Interestingly a version of the title was also created in New York’s Capitol Wrestling Corporation. The promotion that would eventually grow to become WWE.
