NJPW living legend Hiroshi Tanahashi will be getting some ring time in AEW before his highly anticipated clash with Jon Moxley at Forbidden Door.
Widely considered one of the greatest wrestlers in puroresu history, Hiroshi Tanahashi has done it all in New Japan. The master of the High Fly Flow will be teaming with his upcoming opponent in a tag team clash against Chris Jericho and Lance Archer.
Moxley and the former eight time IWGP Heavyweight Champion had a face-to-face on this week’s Dynamite. Before much of anything could be done, the Jericho Appreciation Society plus Lance Archer and former IWGP Junior Heavyweight Champion El Desperado stormed the ring.
Jericho will be teaming with Pancrase legend Minoru Suzuki at Forbidden Door whose Suzuki-Gun faction houses El Desperado as well as Archer during his time in the Land of the Rising Sun.
Hiroshi Tanahashi has been enjoying a good deal of work Stateside this year. Performing on Dynamite will be his most high profile outing in this regard yet.
The match has been added on to a stacked go-home show featuring a clash between Malakai Black and Penta Oscuro in an All-Atlantic Championship qualifying match and Will Ospreay and Aussie Open vs. Orange Cassidy and Roppongi Vice.
Booking for the Forbidden Door match has had to be done on short notice owing to original Hiroshi Tanahashi opponent CM Punk‘s recent foot injury. Interestingly, NJPW’s booking of the IWGP United States Championship this year has implied a long term interest in booking Moxley vs. Tanahashi regardless.
As it stands, the long gestating showdown will be for the interim AEW World Championship instead of NJPW’s oft-vacated red belt.
