Here’s Why Jacob Fatu Gave Up The WWE Tag Team Championship on SmackDown 08/23

Jacob Fatu Solo Sikoa WWE

In a shocking turn of events, fans witnessed Jacob Fatu surrender his WWE Tag Team Championship on the recent episode of SmackDown.

As The Bloodline prepared to defend their tag-team championship against The Street Profits, new Tribal Chief Solo Sikoa compelled Fatu to surrender his gold at first to Sikoa, and then eventually to Tanga Loa. Last week, Fatu cemented his position in the stable after he sidelined Reigns for an indefinite amount of time.

However, Fatu’s sacrifice soon bore fruit as Sikoa promoted The Samoan werewolf as his enforcer. In the previous edition of The Bloodline, Jey and Jimmy Uso served as the tag-team champions, while Sikoa worked as Roman Reigns‘ enforcer.

During Reigns’ entire term, Sikoa never won any championship and instead worked hard to make sure Reigns did not lose his. On tonight’s episode, Jacob Fatu resultantly surrendered his hard-earned championship.

However, Fatu’s ankle injury or possible travel restrictions to Germany could have also factored into this kayfabe decision. Wrestling fans will now have to wait and see what Fatu’s promotion as the enforcer means for this storyline.

How Serious Is Jacob Fatu’s Injury?

At SummerSlam 2024, Fatu sacrificed himself to give Solo Sikoa the upper hand during his match against Cody Rhodes. Jacob Fatu suffered an ankle injury while Sikoa lost to Rhodes after Roman Reigns returned.

Rhodes confirmed the injury a couple of weeks ago and stated:

Couldn’t get the job done on [his] own, and caused Jacob Fatu to get hurt.”

As Fatu still recovers from the injury, fans need to keep their eyes open for Reigns and Jimmy Uso’s much-awaited return.
