Here Is Why AEW Star Chris Jericho Does Not Want A Retirement Match

Chris Jericho Addresses AEW Fan Chants Telling Him To Retire

Chris Jericho explains why he does not want his career to finish like John Cena.

At 54 years of age and nearly four decades of experience in the wrestling industry, Chris Jericho has wrestled globally and won multiple titles. As the current ROH Champion, the veteran is regularly featured on television programming and PPVs, despite him drawing closer to his career’s finishing line.

The year 2025 is set to mark the final year for several pro wrestlers, including John Cena, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and even possibly Goldberg. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Jericho explained why he wishes to not follow a similar path, and even have a retirement match.

“It’s weird for me, I don’t know if I want that much pomp and circumstance. I’m not sure if that’s John’s idea or if it’s the company’s idea. A big retirement match, that’s a lot of pressure. Like Sting with his last one, it was so good, but imagine if it wasn’t. Imagine like [Ric] Flair and Shawn [Michaels], that was a great match but then Flair was like, ‘God, I want to come back.’

It’s like a rock and roll band, why put that sort of stamp on it? This is the retirement tour and then you decide to come back. To me, I just kind of go with the flow and see where I am. Once again, I do not have the ego that would demand an official retirement tour or retirement match. If it’s something that I think would be interesting and I thought would be fun and cool, then maybe I’d do it.”

Cena is set to finish his career in December 2025, while Tanahashi will have his last match at Wrestle Kingdom 16. Meanwhile, The Learning Tree is scheduled to be in a match at Grand Slam Australia, with no official updates on his retirement.

Chris Jericho Has Clarified A Long-Running Rumor

An AEW original and the inaugural World Champion, Jericho has enjoyed several iconic feuds in the promotion. One of the most notable figures in the industry, Jericho is highly rumored to choose his opponents. However, addressing the rumor, Chris Jericho recently cleared it during his interview with Chris Van Vliet.

“I don’t choose anything. I might have a suggestion, but most of the time it’s Tony coming up with who he wants me to work with. I know for example with Mark Briscoe, both of us wanted to work with each other and knew we could have some great matches. I loved working with Mark and what a great kind of mini-feud, or I guess it was a feud. It was a couple of months long. So that was something that we both wanted to do and suggested to Tony.

But most of the time, I mean this whole thing that started working with Rated FTR, that was Tony’s idea. So yeah, I still work for my boss, and I have never once as far as I can remember in the six years I’ve been in AEW ever said no to something. I might not like something, but I got to try and do my best to make it work or maybe come up with something that maybe is a better idea as long as the boss likes it. If the boss wants to do what he wants to do then that’s my job. So that’s what we do.”
