A new report has claimed that The Hardys were originally scheduled to win AEW World Tag Team Titles before a health scare forced plans to change.
On the June 15th special Road Rager edition of AEW Dynamite, the Young Bucks defeated Jurassic Express in a chaotic Ladder Match to claim the AEW World Tag Team Titles for a second time.
However, original plans for the match, including the outcome, were actually very different.
Just two days ahead of the match, Jeff Hardy was arrested and charged for DUI. Officers at the scene noted that the star was unable to complete any of the standard sobriety tests, while in footage of the arrest, Hardy appears very unsteady on his feet.
This led to Hardy being suspended by AEW, and he and Matt were subsequently pulled from the World Tag Team Title Match, leaving just the Young Bucks and Jurassic Express to battle it out.
However, speaking on the Bryan & Vinny & Jonathan Show, Bryan Alvarez revealed that The Hardys were originally scheduled to win the match before plans changed at Double or Nothing. At the show, it was decided that Jeff should be scheduled for a brain scan, and he was on his way to the scan when he was stopped by traffic officers.
Regarding the match on Dynamite, there were plans for The Hardys to be taken out of action before contest began.
“The idea was the Hardys were going to win the tag titles in this ladder match, that was the plan for awhile,” Alvarez said. “Apparently, at the pay-per-view when the Hardys and the Bucks had their match, Jeff was not looking good. Apparently, they examined him afterwards and he was all beat up and he didn’t remember the match.”
“Remember when Jeff got pulled over and said he was on his way to a brain scan? He was on his way to a brain scan. So, his idea was to drink whatever he drank and then drive to his brain scan.”
“They had advertised the ladder match. He was never actually going to be in the ladder match. They were going to do the angle where he and Matt were going to be coming out for the ladder match, they were going to be jumped on the ramp and they were going to be carted off and they weren’t actually going to do the match. So, whether he had his DUI or not, Jeff was never going to do that ladder match. It was always going to be Jurassic Express vs. the Young Bucks for the tag team titles with the Young Bucks winning.”
After Jeff Hardy was pulled from the June 1st episode of AEW Dynamite, his tag team partner Matt revealed that he “didn’t remember” their match at Double or Nothing against the Young Bucks after he as almost knocked out.
