“He Looked At That As A Massive Sign Of Disrespect” – JR On Bob Holly And The Kliq

By Lyle Kilbane. Published 29th January 2021.
Bob Holly

Bob Holly had a varied career in WWE. From a race car driving underdog to the king of the hardcore division, Holly’s full-time WWE career spanned 15 years. Current AEW announcer and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross discussed Holly’s career on his Grilling JR podcast.

JR was asked by co-host Conrad Thompson about one particular event that Holly dealt with on a tour in Europe. The Kliq was at the height of their powers in the mid-nineties. The backstage group that included Shawn Michaels, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, Triple H, and Sean Waltman were notorious for their politics and pranks in the locker room. On this tour, Holly had been the subject of their shenanigans and the former 6-time Hardcore Champion was none too happy.

Thompson explains what happened:

“There’s a famous story that Bob Holly has told several times that The Kliq has essentially disputed…Apparently there was a tour in Europe and Holly said his food card had been torn up by someone backstage. Which basically meant he didn’t have a meal to eat that night. Holly’s mad about this and wants to know who did it. Randy Savage is gonna stooge off “hey, it was Shawn.” And as Holly tells the story, he told Shawn “Don’t f**k with me or f**k with my food.” He says he’s going to cut his fingers off with bolt cutters if he does it again.

(Hall) tried to stand up to him and Holly basically told him “take another step and I’ll knock you out.” After that, Holly said he walked up to Nash when Nash tried to start s**t with him, he drew an ‘X’ on his chin with a finger and told him that’s where he was gonna hit him.”

Nash and Hall have refuted these claims in interviews in the past. They have alluded to the fact that if Holly had done this then they could have had him fired.

JR gave his take on the situation:

“I didn’t see or hear the rebuttal of Nash and company, I don’t know what the tone and tenor was. I don’t know if it was just a rib that went awry…But I do know that Bob Holly’s serious about his food…Bob had a routine and you did not have the right to interrupt his routine on his personal time. He looked at that as a sign of massive sign of disrespect…He (Holly) was a straight shooter so if Bob said it happened, then just based on him, I would think that maybe it did happen. I can’t proclaim it. I think JJ (Dillion, former head of talent relations in the company) was still in charge of talent at the time. But that’s the kind of s**t I inherited.”

Bob Holly last competed for WWE in 2008. His last story with the company revolved around his partnership with current AEW Executive Vice President, Cody Rhodes. The pair were WWE World Tag Team Champions before Rhodes turned on Holly to win those titles with Ted Dibiase Jr.

JR also discussed the reaction to the famous WrestleMania X ladder match between Razor Ramon and Shawn Michaels.
