HBO Max’s ‘Hacks’ References Roman Reigns Joining AEW

Roman Reigns

The possibility of Roman Reigns, the current Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, going to All Elite Wrestling has been referenced in a HBO Max show.

Roman Reigns is unquestionably the biggest star in modern pro wrestling. Currently serving as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, ‘The Tribal Chief’ is viewed by many to be one of the best wrestlers in the world today, having rejuvenated his career after returning in August 2020.

It’s unlikely Reigns will ever depart WWE, but the possibility of the multi-time WrestleMania headliner appearing in, for example, All Elite Wrestling, remains a tantalising topic. The concept of such an event was discussed on HBO Max’s comedy-drama, Hacks.

Robin and Marcus – played by Angela Elayne Gibbs and Carl Clemons-Hopkins, respectively – come up with a solution (h/t Wrestling Inc.):

“OK, I won’t [call him]. But if Roman Reigns ever goes to the AEW, can I at least DM him?”

Clemons-Hopkins’ character, in response, agrees:

“Sure, mom. If Roman Reigns gets to AEW, you can DM my ex-boyfriend.”

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s Dave Meltzer reported recently that Roman Reigns has agreed to a new contract with WWE that will see Reigns wrestle fewer live events. This was teased previously by Roman’s post-match at a live event earlier this month in Trenton, New Jersey.

Roman is slated to retain his major presence across WWE programming, however, with his next trio of premium live event challengers reportedly confirmed. Allegedly scheduled to challenge Roman Reigns at Money In The Bank, SummerSlam, and Clash At The Castle, respectively, are Riddle, Randy Orton, and Drew McIntyre.

Since its launch in early 2019, there have been a number of former WWE Superstars cropping up in AEW; Johnny Elite, the former John Morrison, did so on this week’s Dynamite. Roman Reigns likely never will make the jump, but as the old saying goes, never say never.
