Last week, AEW announced an eight-man elimination tournament for the right to challenge Dean Ambrose for the company’s top prize. The finals of said tournament will take place at AEW Full Gear on November 7.
Along with the announcement, former IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kenny Omega, Jungle Boy and Rey Fenix were the first names added to the brackets.
With six men now entered, AEW are expected to unveil the final two competitors on next week’s edition of Dynamite. However, it’s the inclusion of the former AEW World Tag Team Champions that has garnered the excitement and attention of fans everywhere.
With both Hangman Page and Kenny Omega vying for the opportunity of an AEW World Heavyweight Championship opportunity, the potential of both men meeting in the Final isn’t a possibility lost on the promotion’s fan base.
The former AEW World Tag Team Championships had been teetering on the edge of destruction since they first lifted the doubles gold from SCU in January and ever since, Omega had grown steadily weary of his friend’s attitude, behaviour and slow mental collapse.
At AEW All Out on September 5, the storyline came to a head when Hangman Page and Kenny Omega lost their doubles gold to FTR. After Omega accidentally cracked his partner with a v-trigger which allowed FTR to nail the Mind Breaker for the victory, their friendship took a dark turn.
Kenny contemplated attacking his supposed friend with a steel chair, but instead chose to walk out on him and in the weeks that followed the man known as ‘The Cleaner’ has further distanced himself from The Elite as well as AEW’s devotees.
Kenny Omega vs. Hangman Page was always going to happen at some point. What better place than on pay-per-view with the prize of an AEW World Heavyweight Championship Match hanging in the balance?
