Vince McMahon’s retirement from WWE changed many things – for Edge and Beth Phoenix, it meant their planned trip to Madison Square Garden for Monday’s Raw was off.
The latest edition of the red brand emanated from the historic Madison Square Garden, featuring the twentieth anniversary of Rey Mysterio in WWE. Edge, who has been absent since the start of June, was reportedly scheduled to return as part of this; he almost did, by the sounds of things.
PWInsider’s Mike Johnson recently answered a fan question, asking why ‘The Rated R Superstar’ wasn’t on the episode:
“In our Elite section, we reported that Edge and Beth Phoenix were both slated for MSG but then later reported plans changed shortly after the Vince McMahon exit. The original plans had them also slated for Summerslam weekend, but there’s no word whether that is still happening or they are holding their return off for a later date.”
It was reported that Edge would return at the event following the announcement of Rey teaming with his son Dominik against The Judgement Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest. There’s currently no word on if he’ll return at SummerSlam this weekend, though vignettes have begun airing to promote his comeback.
The multi-time World Champion was written off WWE programming on the Raw after Hell In A Cell, as he was replaced in The Judgement Day by Balor. Edge had originally formed the group following WrestleMania 38 alongside Priest and Rhea Ripley.
Beth Phoenix, meanwhile, hasn’t competed since the Royal Rumble, teaming with her husband to defeat The Miz and Maryse. She’d previously been a full-time member of the announce team until she left the position last December.
