Gunther’s WrestleMania Opponent Revealed

WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther makes entrance with Imperium

A top WWE star has issued a challenge to Gunther to put his Intercontinental Championship on the line at WrestleMania 39.

On the latest edition of SmackDown, the Austrian star led Imperium as they defeated the team of Braun Strowman, Madcap Moss, and Ricochet. The real story came during the match as Drew McIntyre provided an unexpected distraction, appearing on the aisle, staring at the champion.

Afterwards, McIntyre looked like he was going to confront Gunther, but was instead attacked by the Viking Raiders. A brawl ensued that saw Sheamus, Strowman and Ricochet come to the aid of the Scottish Warrior in seeing off Erik and Ivar.

McIntyre’s appearance did not go unnoticed by the Ring General and in a post-match interview, he addressed the former WWE Champion, telling him and anyone else who wanted a shot at the Intercontinental Title to “get in line”.

“To everybody who wants a piece of [the Intercontinental Championship], just get in line.”

However, McIntyre has no intention of waiting and during an appearance on the SmackDown Lowdown challenged Gunther to put the title on the line at WrestleMania 39.

“It’s five weeks to WrestleMania. I want Gunther and I want the Intercontinental Championship.”

Gunther has held the Intercontinental Championship for over 260 days

It has now been over 260 days since Gunther defeated Ricochet to capture the Intercontinental Championship. In that time he has proved to be a dominant force on SmackDown, seeing off challenges from the likes of Shinsuke Nakamura, Rey Mysterio, and Braun Strowman. Most recently, he defeated Madcap Moss on the February 17th edition of the blue brand.

Despite racking up multiple successful defences, the match against McIntyre at WrestleMania will be the first time the title has been on the line at a Premium Live Event since the Austrian’s five-star battle against Sheamus at Clash at the Castle in September 2022.
