Gunther reflected on making history in WWE.
Back in September, Gunther made history when he became the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history, surpassing the record set by the Honky Tonk Man more than 30 years ago.
Speaking in a new interview with 967 The Eagle, the Imperium leader reflected on his legacy, calling it “surreal” to be in the conversation amongst incredible WWE legends.
“It’s a little bit surreal to see your own name on the list with all those legends and greats who have held the title for a long time as well. It’s also very important that you see yourself like that and recognize yourself as one of them. In my case, being on the top of the list. You have to fully embrace that.
“It takes a little while to do that, but I’m fully there now. I’m not stopping yet. I still have a little in me with the Intercontinental Championship and I’m fully focused on whatever the next challenge is. Adding to my legacy and the legacy of the championship.” (h/t Fightful)
Gunther Didn’t Always Want To Join WWE
Speaking in a November interview with WrestlingNews.co, Gunther explained that unlike many young wrestling fans, he didn’t always have his sights set on WWE.
“When I grew up, as a wrestler not when I was a kid, but when I was wrestling and diving in deep and trying to get better and stuff. I don’t know; I kind of despised WWE at that point because I didn’t like watching it. I was focused on I want to be a wrestler, and I want to be…yeah. I want to focus on that athleticism, and everything around it was too much for my personal taste in that time.” (h/t Sportskeeda)
Chad Gable recently opened up about wanting to finish his story with Gunther and defeat the record-breaking champion for the Intercontinental Championship.
