Gunther Opens Up About The WWE Match He

With two historic reigns as champion in WWE, Gunther has faced an array of in-ring competitors, but he recently revealed which opponents he connects with the most.

In an interview on “Busted Open Radio,” Gunther cited Ilja Dragunov and Sheamus as prime examples of wrestlers who bring out the best in him.

Ilja [Dragunov]. I have a few guys I really click with, and kind of in a different way bring it out of me,

He stated, highlighting the unique chemistry he shares with Dragunov. However, he emphasised that Sheamus stands out as a particularly important match for him.

But Sheamus is definitely one that in WWE, I was like, ‘That’s the match you need to have first,’ because that guy, he doesn’t care. He just loves to lay it in. He just loves to feel it. And as long as that’s in the right places, there’s no issue with that.

The rivalry between Gunther and Sheamus dates back two years to WWE Clash at the Castle, where “The Celtic Warrior” unsuccessfully challenged “The Ring General” for the Intercontinental Championship. Despite the loss, Sheamus continued to pursue Gunther and his title, earning two additional opportunities. Their latest encounter took place in the opening round of the 2024 King of the Ring tournament, where Gunther once again emerged victorious.

In contrast, Gunther’s history with Dragunov predates their WWE careers. The two European wrestlers frequently crossed paths in Germany’s wXw and later in NXT UK. He remarked:

I was ahead a little bit [in my career], but we wrestled each other, so [Dragunov] was kind of like a protege a little bit too. I helped him out a little bit. So it’s a different dynamic that we have with that one.
