Gunther has heaped praise on Sheamus after the two men went to war in a stunningly hard-hitting bout at WWE Clash At The Castle.
While much of the Clash At The Castle focus was on the main event, a bout tipped to be in contention for ‘match of the night’ was the Intercontinental Title match between Sheamus and Gunther.
Neither man is known for taking a backward step once the bell rings so fans were expecting hard-hitting action, and lots of it. Unsurprisingly, the packed house at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium were not left disappointed.
On multiple occasions the pair simply stood in the middle of the ring and traded strikes, bringing the crowd to their feet. There were chops galore, knee strikes and more than one huge suplex. In the end it was Gunther who picked up the win after a devastating Powerbomb.
After the match a defiant Sheamus showed off his array of injuries on social media, revelling in the battle he had just survived.
Once the dust had settled on the chaos, Gunther appeared at the post-Clash At The Castle press conference to discuss the event. The Ring General was asked by Alistair McGeorge of The Metro about the respect that he has for his rival.
“First of all, Sheamus, I think Sheamus is a legend in this company and in this sport. Maybe he doesn’t get the appreciation to the level that he might deserve.
I live for matches like this today, I think that’s what this sport should be. It should be intense, a dramatic, intense battle and I think that’s what we put on today. I’m proud of that performance.”
Gunther was also asked about the contrast in his approach to that of Seth Rollins who was sat beside him. The giant Austrian joked that he might not wear Rollins’ outfit but you can’t argue with his success. Naturally, Rollins defended his work ethic, saying that wrestling was his life.
