World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has spoken out on not being in the main event of WrestleMania 41.
At the biggest WWE show of the year, The Ring General will put the title on the line against Jey Uso, who became the number one contender by winning the Royal Rumble match. Although it is often said on commentary that the winner of the Rumble match will receive a main event match at WrestleMania, neither Gunther vs. Jey Uso nor Women’s Royal Rumble winner Charlotte Flair vs. Tiffany Stratton will headline the event. Instead, CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns will main event night 1 and Cody Rhodes vs. John Cena will main event night 2.
While some stars may be disappointed that they are missing out in the main event of the show, especially given that a Royal Rumble winner is in the match, Gunther sees things differently.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani, the World Heavyweight Champion stated that there are more important things to his career than where he appears on the WrestleMania card:
“Well no, I’m not [disappointed]. There’s two main event spots. Some people argue there’s only one, that’s the night two. At the end of the day, those are big achievements. But I don’t want to stress about [it]. Because in the long term, later on, when I finished my career and I know I was able to be financially set up, took care of my family, and that I did all of this, doing the thing that I always wanted to do, I don’t know if I never main event WrestleMania that’s going to make a difference about how proud or happy I will be about my career.
So I think that’s a mental challenge for the wrestlers, you want to do all those things naturally. That’s like the first reactions, like you want to achieve this and you want to do that. It’s often important to put things into perspective and ground yourself a little bit. Because if you always look for that what’s next, like, one more, one more, one more, that’s like an endless game, where’s the end?
I’d rather try to be very focused on what I’m doing at the moment, and put all my effort in there, put my full focus on that and try to make the best thing possible. Yeah, I think that’s when really good stuff happens.”
Gunther Confirms New Deal
