Gunther feels he carried Bill Goldberg in the WWE Hall of Famer’s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL on July 12.

After Goldberg’s swan song, he gave a tell-all interview to Ariel Helwani in which he had some complaints about how his final match went down. The truth of the matter is, however, that fans were able to thoroughly enjoy his match against The Ring General. Many felt it was the Hall of Famer’s best effort after a long time.

The World Heavyweight Champion of Monday Night RAW feels Goldberg should be proud of what they were able to accomplish.

Speaking to Radio Times, Gunther reflected on his recent triumph over the WCW legend, which is a huge feather in his cap. The Ring General feels that Goldberg being able to connect with the fans the way he did on that night was special, which was his intention going into the bout.

He wanted the audience to feel sympathy towards the veteran who was back for one final hurrah, and he feels all parties involved have succeeded in it.

I was very happy with how everything went [against Goldberg] and I feel like we exceeded expectations for the match. For me, it was important to not go out there and have the typical three or four minutes of action and that’s it,” said Gunther.

“I wanted time to tell a story and take the audience on a ride and make them feel bad for him a little bit before it all ends. I think we succeeded with that. He can be very happy with the match and the connection that he had with the audience because that felt very special.”

While Goldberg retired from in-ring competition on that night, Gunther is on to the next. He will defend the World Heavyweight Championship against CM Punk at SummerSlam this weekend on Night 1 (Saturday, August 2).

The Best in the World’s war of words with Gunther has already sent fans into a frenzy. With Seth Rollins out of the picture for the time being, fans feel Punk has a legitimate opportunity to dethrone The Ring General.
