Gunther is aware that a once highly-demanded dream match is now improbable.
At the 2023 Royal Rumble, the Intercontinental Champion had a brief staredown with Brock Lesnar, with many fans in the arena and at home hopeful that a clash of the two powerhouses would begin in the match and be revisited down the line, likely at WrestleMania.
Although the contest didn’t take place in Hollywood, there was optimism once again that Philadelphia would be the location to have Gunther and Lesnar go one-on-one for the first time ever. In light of recent events, plans have changed once again.
In January 2024, Vince McMahon was accused of sex trafficking and multiple counts of sexual assault by former WWE employee Janel Grant. While McMahon and former Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis were explicitly named, another name implicated in the lawsuit is described as “a world-famous athlete and former UFC Heavyweight Champion.” Many believe that Lesnar is this individual and was also named in a Wall Street Journal article.
Creative plans were altered with Brock Lesnar being removed from the Royal Rumble and is not factored into any plans moving forward. There are some who are under the belief that Lesnar will not be seen on WWE TV ever again.
Speaking with GVWire, Gunther discussed Lesnar’s absence and how he feels that the match will no longer happen. However, The Ring General is excited to see who steps up to challenge him at The Show of Shows.
“I always was vocal about my dream match in the past, but that fell through now. I don’t know if we’ll see Brock again if that’s ever going to happen, but I’m wide open when it comes to that as of now,”
Who Will Face Gunther At WrestleMania?
According to previous reports, Lesnar was scheduled to challenge for the Intercontinental Championship before details of the allegations became public knowledge. At the time of writing, it remains unclear who will face The Ring General at WrestleMania 40. One theory is that Bron Breakker may be the challenger as he reportedly was the direct replacement for Lesnar in the Rumble match and may continue to be the replacement until Mania.
Additionally, a WWE Superstar has stated that they want to finish their story with Gunther.
