WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg is expected back on WWE SmackDown as early as tonight.
The report states that the current creative plan is for the former Universal Champion to challenge Roman Reigns for the championship at the Elimination Chamber event in Saudi Arabia on 19 February. “Da Man” was originally due to defend the blue brand’s championship against Reigns at WrestleMania 36, but Roman ultimately backed out of the match, owing to the COVID protocols in place and his own past with leukaemia.
It’s worth noting that although this is the current plan, there is always the chance that Goldberg won’t return tonight, as flights are currently being cancelled all across the country. As of right now, though, he’s scheduled to travel to Oklahoma City, the site of tonight’s SmackDown broadcast.
Goldberg last wrestled for WWE at their latest Saudi Arabia event, defeating Bobby Lashley in an intense Falls Count Anywhere match at Crown Jewel on 21 October.
As with any Goldberg appearance, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll dethrone Roman Reigns. In his latest championship challenges, WWE has booked Goldberg to lose to Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley at last year’s Royal Rumble and SummerSlam pay-per-views, respectively.
Roman Reigns is currently due to defend the Universal championship against Royal Rumble winner Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38 on 2 and 3 April, with the expectation being that this will somehow become a title vs. title contest for the WWE Championship, too.
