Goldberg seemingly rejected WWE’s offer for his son, Gage, due to the salary they were offering.
There have been many instances where children of professional wrestlers have followed in the footsteps of their parents in the industry. Currently, there are Charlotte Flair, Roman Reigns, The Usos, Cody Rhodes, among several others. Unsurprisingly, their parents are also happy to share the sport with their family, but for WWE Hall of Famer, Goldberg, it may have to come with a proper price.
Gage Goldberg has appeared on WWE television in the past, even getting involved in the action like at the SummerSlam 2021 with Bobby Lashley. Recently, he went face-to-face with Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event during the Hall of Famer’s retirement match. Due to this, it’s no wonder that the 18-year-old caught the company’s attention.
In a recent interview onThe Ariel Helwani Show, Goldberg revealed WWE offered Gage an NIL deal. However, he advised his son not to accept the offer after he found out how much the youngster would get paid. Currently, it is unknown whether his advice was because the number was too high or too low:
They tried to give him an NIL. But when I found out how much they were going to give him I put the breaks on that one.”
For those who may not know, NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) is a program WWE created to “recruit and develop potential superstars.” After the NCAA allowed athletes to monetize their name and likeness, the program gives selected students access to WWE’s Performance Center, media training facility, brand building, among other resources. Athletes may also be offered an exclusive contract with the company.
Goldberg Says His Son Is Lucky To Have WWE As A Backup Plan
In the same interview with Ariel Helwani, the Hall of Famer shared that Gage, who plays for the Colorado Buffaloes as a Linebacker, is busy with college football at the moment. However, the recently retired star is also not shutting down the possibility of seeing his son in the squared circle one day.
Goldberg added that his son was like him in terms of putting football first, but he does have WWE as a backup plan. The Hall of Famer added that his son was lucky to consider the Triple H-led promotion as an alternate career option.
