G1 Climax 2021 Results So Far And Tournament Schedule

By Scott McDonald. Published 25th September 2021.
G1 Climax 2021

With the G1 Climax 2021 edition now in full swing, Inside The Ropes will provide full coverage of the results after every show.

Unfortunately, Tetsuya Naito suffered a knee injury in his tournament-opener with Zack Sabre Jr. As a result, all of his remaining matches have been counted as forfeits and his opponents have gained automatic two points.

The G1 Climax is New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s biggest annual singles tournament. A twenty-man roundrobin tournament takes place over the course of a month; two points are awarded for a win, one point is awarded for a draw and zero points are awarded for a loss. Block matches have a thirty minute time limit.

The winners of each block face each other in one final match, with the winner earning the right to challenge for the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship at Wrestle Kingdom 16. Shingo Takagi is the current champion and will be able to choose his own opponent for Wrestle Kingdom should he win the G1 Climax.

Despite reaching its thirty-first iteration, the reigning heavyweight champion has only won the G1 Climax on two occasions: Keiji Mutoh in 1995 and Kensuke Sasaki in 2000.

This year’s edition of the tournament features a notably depleted roster, as key New Japan figures such as Will Ospreay, Minoru Suzuki, Jay White and Juice Robinson are all in the United States for the time being; New Japan has sent various names over to work for Strong (their U.S. based division), whilst Suzuki is currently booked for various independent shows in the United States. However, he also took the time to appear in AEW!
