Former WWE Superstar Explains Why They Were Disappointed With Their Name Change

Former WWE NXT Superstar Damon Kemp, whose real name is Bobby Steveson, shed light on the peculiar decision by WWE to give him and his real-life brother, Gable Steveson, completely separate identities and storylines on television.

In a recent episode of “Casual Conversations” on the Wrestling Classic, Bobby Steveson expressed his initial confusion about the name change, stating:

So, it was weird (dynamic between myself & my brother in WWE). He was doing his thing with amateur wrestling… the Olympics and stuff like that, and then I wanted to keep my last name. I was like, ‘Why not keep my last name? He’s literally in the business with me. Looks just like me. Why would we differentiate at all?’

The former NXT star revealed that WWE officials had hinted at future plans for the brothers, saying:

And then they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, eventually, we’ll get to something where you guys get to do this and do that.’

However, these plans never materialized during his tenure with the company. Steveson also shared an intriguing tidbit about a potential dream match that was teased but never came to fruition.

We were told, ‘If you guys ever wrestle, it would be at WrestleMania,’ and we were literally told that.

The decision to keep the brothers’ relationship undisclosed on TV led to some awkward moments, particularly when Gable Steveson was involved in a storyline with Eddy Thorpe. Bobby recalled:

I just thought it was like comedy kind of, in a way. Because I was like, I found out that he was gonna help him out because he knew me really well. But we weren’t related.

Despite the confusion and missed opportunities, Bobby Steveson remains optimistic about potential future storylines. He mused:

I’m just thinking at the time, thinking of the what ifs.

Damon Kemp‘s run in NXT came to an end when his faction, the No Quarter Catch Crew, seemingly disposed of him in the trunk of a car, writing him off television.

When Did Damon Kemp Depart From WWE?

Damon Kemp revealed on social media on July 8th that he had left WWE and was no longer under contract with the company. However, he wasn’t officially a free agent until the end of August as it was reported that he still had five weeks left on his contract after he said he’d left the company.
