Former WWE Star Training With Jon Jones Teases Future MMA Stint

This former WWE star is now eyeing a future MMA run.

2020 Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson was deemed one of the next biggest figures in pro wrestling. However, last year, Steveson was released from his WWE contract. He later signed a deal with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills but was released from there as well.

Following a disappointing 2024, Steveson participated in the 2025 NCAA World Heavyweight Championship, but unfortunately was unsuccessful. A former two-time NCAA Division I national champion and Olympic gold medalist, Steveson is now eyeing a different career.

Currently training with MMA veteran and current UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones, Gable Steveson shared his thoughts on entering MMA. Speaking to Pat McAfee on the Pat McAfee Show, he said:

“Just making sure I can get my hands certified and ready, making sure that I can see punches and make sure that I’m comfortable in the cage and comfortable with guys in front of me that are going to throwing these huge haymakers, and getting in and getting out of the way.

I got a great mentor right now. I hope a lot of people know a guy named Jon Jones…he’s pretty damn good [laughs], and I appreciate his efforts of trying to lead me into the right direction and taking my back and giving me the direction I need. I’m really young, and he’s been there and he’s done that before, so I’m really appreciative of how he’s kind of walked my steps leading into this next chapter, if that’s what it is.”

He further said,

“I think that’s the best outlet for amateur wrestlers overall, and I have not spoken to Dana personally. That’s one meeting that I would love to have face-to-face. I’ve been waiting a long time to see him. I know after the 2021 Olympics, he reached out to me and wanted me to come see him in Vegas and everything else. So that’s one meeting that I would love to have and love to see. So if I can get in front of his face and really pitch who I and pitch who he can see and who I will be, I think that would be the greatest thing.”

Former WWE Star Gable Steveson Also Teases Another NFL Run

In the same interview with Pat McAfee, Steveson also teased another future NFL run. Discussing multiple career options, including combat sports and the NFL, he said:

“The sun always comes up the next day. That’s a saying that everyone’s always talked about. But what’s next for me is, I’ve been boxing, I’ve been putting on the gloves, doing jiu-jitsu classes, trying to get ready for an MMA career, or right after I stepped off the mat Saturday night, just a couple calls from a few new teams in the NFL. The roads keep opening, and I’m just so happy that I can go out there and put on my best performance.”
