Former WWE Superstar Kelly Kelly, whose real name is Barbie Blank, recently opened up about the authenticity of her in-ring persona and shared an amusing story about her unsuccessful pitch to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to transform her character into a villain.
During a recent appearance on Byron Scott’s Fast Break podcast, the former Divas Champion explained that her wrestling character was essentially an amplified version of her authentic self, making it nearly impossible for her to convincingly portray a heel character despite her desire to explore that dimension of professional wrestling.
Kelly Kelly was me. It was me just 100 times more. That was the greatest thing, to just be myself. I could have never been a bad guy. I tried.
Blank went on to recount a memorable interaction with Vince McMahon when she approached him about potentially changing her character direction.
Vince was like…that was the other time I went to his office, ‘I want to be a bad guy.’ He’s like, ‘Alright, let me see your bad guy face.’
According to Blank, she attempted to demonstrate her most intimidating expression but couldn’t maintain the serious demeanour, immediately breaking into laughter. McMahon’s response was characteristically blunt.
Kelly, get out of my office. No.
During her WWE tenure from 2006 to 2012, Blank was consistently portrayed as one of the company’s most beloved babyfaces. Her energetic entrance, which included her signature “Kelly Kelly twirl,” and natural charisma made her a fan favourite, particularly among younger audiences and female viewers during a period when WWE was transitioning toward more family-friendly programming.
Since leaving WWE, Blank has pursued various entertainment opportunities including reality television, modelling, and occasional wrestling appearances such as a surprise appearance in the 2022 Women’s Royal Rumble Match.
