Former WWE Champion On What They Dislike Most In Modern Wrestling

Al Snow, a former WWE Tag Team, Hardcore and European champion, has remained active in the wrestling industry despite not competing in the promotion since 2007. Having participated in various venues, with his most recent match in October 2023, and overseeing OVW, Snow continues to contribute as both a competitor and mentor.

However, during an appearance on Busted Open Radio, he candidly expressed his profound concern about the evolution of professional wrestling. Al Snow lamented that the WWE and the rest of the modern industry have lost the essence of the “art of selling,” emphasising the significance of conveying the authentic nature of wrestling.

I guess what I don’t like about it is the loss of the real art of what it is, you know. The art of selling, the misunderstandings, the lack of intrinsic things that are of the true nature of what we do. The objective of selling is selling who you are and selling your intent, your sense of urgency, that you’re really attempting to try to win and not lose a match.

He elaborated on the misconceptions and the absence of intrinsic elements that define the true essence of the sport, particularly emphasising the misconception that “selling” solely entails feigning injury. According to Snow, genuine selling involves portraying one’s identity and intent, as well as the urgency to win rather than lose a match. Moreover, Snow highlighted the prevalent issue of talented performers attempting to sell the wrong aspects in today’s wrestling landscape. He underscored the universal concept of selling a character in sports entertainment, drawing parallels with sports like football, basketball, and MMA.

Snow emphasised that the focus should not solely be on the athletes’ actions, but rather on who they are as individuals that the audience can genuinely connect with. He emphasised the importance of understanding the stakes and why the audience should invest in the narrative.

It’s not what these athletes do, it’s the who the athlete is that you can believe in. And what’s at stake? Why does this one game matter? Why should you as an audience care?
