Former WWE Announcer Teases Return Following Recent Commentary Departure

Pat McAfee has teased a return to the WWE commentary desk following the recent shake-up.

In the company’s latest change of onscreen personnel, Kevin Patrick was released from his contract on January 25th. Although it has been reported that Michael Cole will be calling the action on both shows until further notice, the promotion will once again be looking for a permanent fixture on SmackDown.

During a recent episode of The Pat McAfee Show, the former announcer referenced there being a seat available on the main roster line-up:

“SmackDown, I heard there’s a commentary spot opened up, huh?”

Paul Heyman, who was a guest on the show, asked if McAfee intended to repeat what happened in 2023 and make a surprise appearance at the event. McAfee stated that as he is in Indiana and the weather conditions are poor he responded that it would be doubtful.

After the interview with Heyman concluded, McAfee revealed how The Wise Man would frequently offer him valuable advice out of nowhere:

“Whenever I was going through my different runs and stuff with the WWE or whatever was happening, [Heyman] would just like slowly walk up next to me and then just drop like the greatest sage advice of all time, pat on the back, and then just kind of walk away. I’m like, ‘Okay, holy s***. Yes, that makes a lot of sense whenever you say it like that.'”

Could Pat McAfee Return To WWE Commentary?

In September 2022, McAfee stopped calling the action each week due to his commitments with ESPN and presenting College GameDay. After presenting the show for one season, Pat McAfee gave the surprising update that he would not be returning to the show, effectively freeing up his schedule.

McAfee last appeared on programming at the Fastlane Premium Live Event in October 2023. Taking place in his native city of Indianapolis, McAfee was a part of the introductory package and introduced John Cena, sticking around to provide commentary on Cena’s match.

Making his return at the 2024 Royal Rumble, Pat McAfee made an interesting revelation about the event.
