Vince McMahon once gave a bizarre directive to an announcer in their earlier years.
As has been recounted by numerous commentators over the years, McMahon was frequently on the headset giving instructions to the announce team while they were also calling the action. Many commentators have recounted tales of McMahon yelling at them for getting a fact slightly wrong or saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
Prior to becoming RETRIBUTION member MACE and then Maximum Male Model ma. çé, the former WWE Star commentated on multiple episodes of Raw under the name Dio Maddin. Calling the action alongside Jerry Lawler and Vic Joseph, Mace remembered a particular episode in 2019 where things were going well and all 3 were having a great time. However, according to McMahon, the trio were told they should not be enjoying their time behind the desk that much.
Speaking on Cafe de Rene, Mace remembers getting great feedback from veteran announcer Michael Cole. However, this praise was shot down in a matter of seconds when McMahon informed them that they should not be as friendly this early into their partnership:
[The team was] Me, Vic [Joseph] and King, it was a really fun episode of Raw and at that time, I think it was 2019, those were few and far between. It was a really fun episode of Raw and we’re having a blast. We’re cracking jokes, the chemistry is on point. I hear [Michael] Cole in my head. He’s like, ‘Oh, you guys are killing it right now. You guys are doing great’ and then I hear Vince [McMahon] in the back of my ear, ‘You guys are having too much fun. You’re not there yet.”
Then I’m like, alright. You have to talk for three hours. So as soon as you’re in your own head about what do I say? What do I say? Then all of a sudden, you’re stumbling over yourself and you don’t know what to do. So, that was one of two times where I was just like, alright, I’m just gonna ease back into the chair and kind of let King, who’s been doing this for 50 years, carry the load because I don’t know what to say.
In a separate interview, Mace recalled an episode of WWE Raw where he was attacked by Brock Lesnar while sat behind the announcers’ desk.
AEW Announcer Gives Honest Thoughts On Vince McMahon
McMahon’s sudden change of heart has been well documented over the years, with last-minute changes frequently playing havoc on live broadcasts. This bizarre mentality has also extended to talent acquisition as a current AEW announcer believes that Vince McMahon wanted to hire him just so he could personally fire him.
In a new interview, another former WWE announcer has recounted an amusing Vince McMahon story.
In regards to McMahon’s unique ideas, Mace would also reveal that FOX would cancel WWE creative plans.
