A former AEW champion has opened up about struggles they faced because of their title win.
Back in March 2022, Thunder Rosa defeated Britt Baker to become the fifth AEW Women’s World Champion in history. Her reign came to an unfortunate end when she was forced to relinquish the belt just months later due to a back injury that would keep her out of action for over a year.
During a recent interview with Tim Hann Rivera, Rosa opened up about her 5-month championship reign. While there were plenty of positives, she admitted she wasn’t mentally prepared for the challenges of being a champion including mental health impacts and seeing her friends turn on her.
Oh everything, it changed everything. It brought me from the highest of the highs to the lowest of the lows. Success can be like a drug and it can be something that you are addicted to, the attention and everything on you.
But it also can be very detrimental to your soul, can be detriment to your life, and can be detrimental to your mental health if you don’t know how to manage it.
When I won the title, I don’t think, mentally, I was ready for it because so much came with it, good and bad at the same time. The good: You create history, you’re able to have a bigger platform, you’re another level now, people see you with different eyes. You get comps (laughs). People see you as the s**t.
Then on the downside, people are insecure, envious, jealous. You see the worst of them. Then you see your friends turning on you or people that you thought you could trust, you can’t trust them anymore. It’s heartbreaking, and you have to stay strong.
Is Britt Baker Done With AEW Amid Recent Absence?
Reports emerged earlier this week that Thunder Rosa’s most prominent AEW rival, Britt Baker, could be done with the promotion altogether following a number of incidents.
However, a subsequent report from Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer claims that initial reports about Britt Baker were blown out of proportion. While there are no plans for the AEW original as things stand, there is reportedly nothing to indicate she is done with the company entirely.
