A former AEW champion has admitted to being confused over the recent creative direction of their character.
Former AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander has had a somewhat tumultuous 2024. At Double or Nothing earlier in the year, Statlander betrayed long-time friend Willow Nightingale and allied herself with Stokely Hathaway – turning heel for the first time since the indies.
After months of on-and-off feuding, the two settled their differences at All Out where Statlander emerged victorious in a Chicago Street Fight. Just weeks later, however, she quietly parted ways with Hathaway and turned face, a move that confused many fans.
The surprise turn baffled some even further following Statlander’s unsuccessful challenge against current TBS Champion Mercedes Mone at Full Gear, prompting confusion over the reason behind her sudden alignment turn.
But it’s not just fans that are unclear about the former Best Friends member’s recent direction. Speaking on a recent edition of AEW Unrestricted, Statlander alluded that even she is confused about her character as of late.
“I think many people are still confused about me, and I am also confused about myself.”
Jim Ross Believes Mercedes Mone Had Her Best AEW Match Yet At Full Gear
Despite the confusion surrounding the challenger’s motivations, Mercedes Mone vs Kris Statlander was one of the standout matches of Full Gear. AEW announcer Jim Ross had particularly high praise for the bout, calling it Mone’s best match in the promotion so far.
In addition, the match also made history by setting a new record. Lasting 19 minutes and 25 seconds, Mone and Statlander’s clash became the longest women’s match in the promotion’s history.
