The Young Bucks did not have the best night at Forbidden Door but a new report says the team was originally slated for a monumental victory on the show.
The Young Bucks rejoined Bullet Club once again for one night only at Forbidden Door as they teamed with El Phantasmo to take on the Dudes With Attitude – Sting, Darby Allin, and Shingo Takagi. This match, like many others on the show, was affected by illness and injury with Hiromu Takahashi originally slated to be on Sting’s team but having to miss the show after showing a fever when boarding his flight in Japan.
Hikuleo was the fourth man originally scheduled to be in the match in its original advertising of an 8-man tag team match but with Takahashi’s absence, the big man was a spectator outside the ring.
In the end, it was the Dudes With Attitude that picked up the win, resigning The Young Bucks to their first defeat since becoming two-time AEW Tag Team Champions.
But as Dave Meltzer has reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it could have been a very different night for Matt and Nick Jackson at Forbidden Door. The report states that NJPW’s booker Gedo had originally wanted The Young Bucks to capture the IWGP Tag Team Championship in a match that would have seen both IWGP and AEW Tag Team Titles on the line.
This was changed to the three way winner take all match for the IWGP and Ring of Honor Tag Team Championships that was won by FTR. The Young Bucks were said to be receptive to the change and appreciative of the idea that FTR are now IWGP, ROH, and AAA Tag Team Champions.
There was also the suggestion that this could lead to what could be billed as the biggest tag team match of all time if The Young Bucks and FTR looked to put all four tag team championships on the line against each other at some point down the road.
