With AEW and NJPW joining forces to bring fans Forbidden Door, it now looks like the supershow could be set to become an annual extravaganza!
On the April 20th edition of AEW Dynamite, it was announced that the relationship between AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling would be moving to a new level. The result is a super-show that will be held on June 26th at the United Center in Chicago.
With hype reaching fever pitch for the show, over 11,000 tickets were sold in a matter of minutes when the pre-sale began on May 5th.
The first match announced for the event was set to see AEW World Champion CM Punk take on the Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling, Hiroshi Tanahashi. However, following Punk’s foot injury that has taken him out of action Tanahashi is now slated to face Jon Moxley to crown an Interim AEW World Champion.
Forbidden Door will also see the first AEW All-Atlantic Champion crowned in a Four-Way Match. With competitors from all over the globe competing for a chance to get into the match, it is sure to be an international affair on June 26th.
Now speaking to comicbook.com, Tony Khan was clear when asked if he’d like Forbidden Door to become an annual event:
“Yeah. I think we are hoping that’s what it’ll become.”
