First Title Match Set For NJPW Resurgence

By Liam Wyatt. Published 1st July 2021.

New Japan Pro Wrestling have a big upcoming show in the US, which will be their first in front of a live American audience since February 2020.

The aptly named Resurgence will feature several current champions including IWGP US Champion Jon Moxley and STRONG Openweight Champion ‘Filthy’ Tom Lawlor.

However, the first announced title match of the card will feature none other than the ‘Switchblade’ Jay White.

The New Zealander is the current NEVER Openweight Champion and is scheduled to make the first defence of the belt he won from Hiroshi Tanahashi at Wrestling Dontaku on May 3rd, against former IMPACT Tag Team Champion, David Finlay.

White nominated Finlay as his first challenger in the immediate aftermath of his win over ‘The Ace’, citing Finlay’s shock victory over him at this year’s New Japan Cup as his rationale.

Prior to that match, Finlay had been on a ten match losing streak against his fellow Young Lion alumni, with the victory sparking a productive year which has included a run with the IMPACT Tag Team Championships alongside FinJuice cohort Juice Robinson.

NJPW Resurgence will emenate from the The Torch at L.A. Coliseum and will also feature the likes of The Goodbrothers, Fred Rosser and Lio Rush.
