Finn Balor will finally get to put the demons of the last few weeks to rest as he finally gets his shot at the WWE Universal Championship next week on SmackDown.
Balor was at the centre of controversy when it came to Roman Reigns picking his challenger for a Universal Title defence at SummerSlam. John Cena shocked the world when he returned to WWE and confronted Reigns after The Tribal Chief had seen off the challenge of Edge at Money In The Bank.
With Cena making his feelings known that he wanted to face Reigns for a chance to become a record-setting seventeen-time champion of the world, Reigns had other ideas. Roman Reigns had also been challenged by the first-ever WWE Universal Champion Finn Balor who had not long returned to the blue brand after a spell on NXT. Rather than choose to face Cena, Reigns accepted the Irish star’s challenge to a match but when the two men sat down to sign the contract for SummerSlam, things went south in a hurry.
With Balor poised to sign his name on the contract to face Reigns at The Biggest Party Of The Summer, he was attacked by a down-on-his-luck Baron Corbin. After losing his crown, his fortune, and his dignity, Corbin sought to steal the contract for himself, seeing the Universal Title as a way to return to his previous lifestyle.
This brought John Cena to the ring and he made short work of Corbin before taking possession of the contract himself. With Reigns seething as he looked on, John Cena inked his own name and took the title shot that Reigns had refused him.
At SummerSlam Cena and Reigns met in a hard-fought main event that eventually saw Roman Reigns pick up the victory and retain his title. But champions don’t get to rest for long in WWE as Finn Balor has not forgotten about what happened to him.
On SmackDown as The Bloodline were celebrating a successful SummerSlam as The Usos also retained their WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship, Finn Balor made his presence felt.
Balor interrupted proceedings and challenged Reigns to a match next week on SmackDown as he didn’t want to wait any longer after being screwed out of one title opportunity. While Reigns seemingly deliberated, Balor attacked The Tribal Chief but was soon overwhelmed by The Usos. This brought out the Street Profits to even the odds and Balor stood tall with Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins as the show went off the air.
WWE took to social media after the event to announce that the Universal Championship had been made official and Balor will challenge Reigns when the blue brand rolls into Jacksonville.
