NXT Champion, Finn Balor, has set his sights on Pete Dunne as the next challenger to his seemingly indomitable throne.
Prior to his NXT Championship defence against Undisputed ERA member, Kyle O’Reilly, ‘The Prince’ joined the cast of WWE’s The Bump to talk about his reign and who he sees stepping into the ring against next.
With a whole heap of challengers waiting in line, Balor handpicked the former and longest reigning WWE United Kingdom Champion in history, Pete Dunne. During the interview, he stated:
“For me, someone who has really come up through the ranks and who continually impresses me is Pete Dunne. That is someone I would really love to be in the ring with. There’s [Karrion] Kross, and then there’s [Damian] Priest. But the match I would love to sink my teeth into is one with Pete Dunne.”
Finn Balor and Pete Dunne have history outside the squared circle. Away from their NXT confrontations over the past few months and Balor being the man to re-introduce The Undisputed ERA to attack Dunne’s Kings of NXT, the Irishman was in the front row for the inaugural WWE United Kingdom Championship Tournament in 2017 where ‘The Bruiserweight’ fell just short in an excellent finale.
Pete Dunne has been in and around the NXT Championship picture since his return to the company at Halloween Havoc in October 2020. Main eventing NXT TakeOver: WarGames on December 6, Dunne narrowly missed out on the headliner on January 6 when he fell to Kyle O’Reilly in a number one contenders bout on December 23.
With the next NXT TakeOver on the horizon on Valentine’s Day, fans of Pete Dunne could finally get what they’ve been after since the Brit joined the brand in 2019.
At NXT New Year’s Evil on January 6, Finn Balor retained the NXT Championship against Kyle O’Reilly in another stunning and hard hitting encounter in which it was said both men were taken to hospital.
