Roman Reigns won’t be facing Finn Balor at Extreme Rules, he’ll be facing The Demon.

A blockbuster episode of SmackDown was capped off by a shocking appearance from Balor in his signature body paint for the first time since 2019.

In the show’s main event, The Usos retained their SmackDown Tag Team Titles against The Street Profits with more than a little help from Roman Reigns.

It was a tension-filled night for the Tribal Chief after he was confronted by Brock Lesnar early in the show. Lesnar came to the ring to ask why Paul Heyman didn’t tell Reigns that he would be at SummerSlam. With Reigns out of the ring, Heyman did his signature announcement for Lesnar, but The Beast hoisted him up for an F5. However, Reigns and The Usos intervened and saved the Special Counsel .

In the main event, with The Usos reeling, Reigns arrived at ringside, initially just keeping a watching brief. The Usos and The Street Profits threw everything at each other with numerous near falls for both teams. Montez Ford threw caution to the wind as only he can, despite losing a shoe mid-way through the contest.

However, after Ford hit a splash from the top rope, he looked to have the titles won but Reigns rushed the ring and choked him out with the guillotine.

With Reigns standing tall, he accepted the challenge for a match with Lesnar, which The Beast made earlier in night. Reigns said that he was coming for Lesnar after he had smashed Finn Balor.

Then the lights dimmed and flashed red as smoke filled the entrance way. The signature sound of a heartbeat pulsed around Madison Square Garden and The Demon arrived to a monster ovation. Balor slowly made his way to the ring, starring down the Universal Champion as the show went off the air.

Balor had teased the return of The Demon the previous week after being defeated by Reigns. As Balor lay prone in the ring, the lights flashed red and the sound of a heartbeat briefly flicked round the arena.

Finn Balor is scheduled to meet Reigns for the Universal Title at Extreme Rules.
