Finn Balor Defeated On SmackDown, Hints The Demon May Return

Finn Balor as The Demon King

Finn Balor hasn’t appeared as ‘The Demon’ since Super ShowDown in 2019, but that could be about to change.

On the September 3rd edition of SmackDown, Finn Balor finally got his hands on Roman Reigns. Balor had been trying to face Reigns since returning to the main roster in July and on SmackDown he finally got his wish.

On the SmackDown after SummerSlam, Balor challenged Reigns pointing out that he had been in line for a shot at the Universal Title before John Cena intervened. This led to the match being made official for September 3rd.

In the main event, Balor was on the back foot before the match even started. As he made his way to the ring he was attacked by The Uso’s before The Street Profits ran in to make the save. Despite the beatdown, Balor insisted the match begin with Reigns taking control early.

However, Balor wasn’t going to give in quietly and mounted a comeback. The Irishman trapped Reigns in the ring apron stomping on him before following up with a huge dive. Reigns fought back getting a near fall with a Superman Punch but Balor wasn’t done. He hit a shotgun dropkick before landing the Coup de Grace.

Reigns just about managed to kick out, hitting Balor with a low blow in the process. After regaining his composure, Reigns locked in the guillotine as the referee called for the bell.

The biggest story arguably came after the match as Reigns left the ring. With the champion heading back up the ramp, the lights flashed red with the sound of a heartbeat, reminiscent of Balor’s entrance theme as ‘The Demon.’

Elsewhere on SmackDown it was announced that Becky Lynch will defend her SmackDown Women’s Title against Bianca Belair at Extreme Rules. The pair will meet next week at Madison Square Garden for a contract signing. The special edition of SmackDown will also see the return of Brock Lesnar.
