A WWE Raw star has looked back on their surprise victory over John Cena, winning their first championship in the process.
Following a series of vignettes, Carlito made his WWE debut on SmackDown in late 2004. Competing in his first match on the main roster, Carlito challenged Cena for the United States Championship. In what was a shock upset, the debuting wrestler beat the champ to start off his WWE career with a huge win.
Speaking with Kenny McIntosh over WrestleMania weekend, Carlito admitted he had fond memories of the Cena match, adding that he knew Cena would be a big star in the industry:
“It was great. Taking down [Cena], I think he wasn’t the biggest thing at that point, but you could tell he was going to be the biggest star in the world. To humble him for one night was not bad at all.”
When asked about the heel turn at Elimination Chamber, Carlito jokingly added that he hoped Cena would remain the constant good guy like himself, but added that Cena has earned the right to end his career on his own terms:
“Very disappointed. Like I said before, I think he’d always be a good guy like me. But it is what it is. Like I said, he can go out the way he wants to at this point. So if that’s what he wants to do, so be it.”
