Exclusive: Rey Mysterio Blown Away By Rise Of Dominik Mysterio

Rey Mysterio is proud of how far his son, Dominik Mysterio, has come in the past few years.

Dominik Mysterio made his in-ring debut at SummerSlam 2020 when took on Seth Rollins in a Street Fight as part of the rivalry between Rollins and Rey Mysterio. From there, he began teaming with his father, and the pair captured the SmackDown Tag Team Titles in May 2021 at Backlash.

After feeling like he was in the shadow of Rey for years, Dominik turned on the elder Mysterio and joined The Judgment Day in 2022. Since then, he has become one of the top heels in WWE and is regularly booed so loudly it’s difficult to hear what he’s saying in arena’s around the world.

On April 6th, Rey and Dominik will clash at WrestleMania for the second time as Rey teams up with Andrade El Idolo and Dominik with Santos Escobar. It comes a year after the two faced off in singles action at WrestleMania 39, where Rey came out on top in a bout that was praised by fans and critics alike. Just a few years ago, it was a clash that Rey never thought was on the cards.

Speaking exclusively to Inside The Ropes’ own Kenny McIntosh ahead of the Showcase Of The Immortals, Rey Mysterio compared working with his son to his World Title win at WrestleMania 22, saying that they were both things he didn’t think would happen.

“I never thought I would win a world title up until WrestleMania 22. And I most definitely didn’t think that I would ever wrestle against my son because he showed no interest for the sport until the age of 19.

“When he broke in the business roughly about three years ago, I didn’t think he would catch up to the status of maybe one day, wrestling together or even wrestling against each other. We became world tag team champions father and son for the first time in history. And then shortly after we had our first WrestleMania together against Logan Paul and the Miz.”

When the two faced off for the first time, Rey was amazed by his son’s growth as a wrestler.

“The year after then I had to face him for the very first time and his growth was just incredible. As a father, there is a sense of pride that I felt throughout these past three years of watching him perform. And to my surprise here we are once again facing against each other now in a tag team match, I’m truly blown away.”

The original plans for Rey Mysterio’s WrestleMania 40 match were changed at the last minute. Originally, he was set to team with Dragon Lee, but after the star was ruled unable to compete, Mysterio quickly found a new ally.

During the same interview, Rey Mysterio gave his thoughts on the 2014 Royal Rumble and that infamous fan reaction.
