Drew McIntyre has explained his genuine hatred for the ending of his match against Roman Reigns at Clash at the Castle in 2022.
In Cardiff, Wales, McIntyre came closer than anyone before him in his attempt to overcome The Bloodline and defeat Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. However, just when he was on course to win the gold, Solo Sikoa made his main roster debut to aid the Tribal Chief to victory.
Following the loss, boxing star Tyson Fury got in the ring to commiserate with McIntyre, and the pair tried to lead a confused audience in a singalong of American Pie in an attempt to send them home happy.
Now, McIntyre has a chance to wipe the loss from history as he will challenge Damian Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship in his home country of Scotland at the 2024 edition of Clash at the Castle.
Speaking exclusively to Kenny McIntosh of Inside The Ropes ahead of the match, McIntyre reflected on 2022, admitting he “genuinely hated it.”
“Yeah I genuinely hated it. It was the biggest moment and match of my life up until it wasn’t. it was so perfect until it wasn’t. Getting the PLE, finally, after 30 years in the stadium in the UK since SummerSlam ’92, getting the main event fighting Roman when he was at the point where he was just on fire and people were cheering him even though he was the bad guy, and having that in my head like, “It probably be 70:30 me,” because know the Bret [Hart] vs. [British] Bulldog just because how popular Roman is.”
Instead, the crowd were completely behind the Scotsman, something that made his loss so much worse.
“But hearing the crowd, hearing 100% in my corner feeling like this is it this is the night that it should happen. Taking out the whole Bloodline and then Solo appears, the finish happens and just feeling the energy literally drain out the room. Feeling like everyone felt like they got stabbed through the freaking heart it was soul-crushing, and then trying to sing the stupid song with Tyson to try and lift the spirits a bit.
“People were trying to join in and sing along, but it just wasn’t it. Sometimes even in football matches your team loses and you leave dejected, I should have just left how I felt, p**sed off. We’re going to fix that this Saturday though.”
