A former WWE Champion has admitted that their time in the 24/7 Championship division was all bad.
Introduced in May 2019, the new championship looked to be doomed from the start. As soon as Mick Foley unveiled the ugly design of the 24/7 title and the undercard came chasing after it, fans were instantly told that it was not a division that would be taken seriously. While some comedic skits were entertaining at first, the chase sequences became a clear sign that no one should pay attention to the match or segment taking place in the ring at that time.
Thrown in the trash by Nikki Cross in November 2022, many were happy to see the 24/7 Championship retired from existence. However, when looking back on his time in the division, Jinder Mahal admitted there were some bright moments.
Speaking with Straight Talk Wrestling, Mahal spoke about some of the more comedic segments in his earlier reign including segments on a long-haul flight and on a golf course:
“It was an on-the-fly moment—just someone thinking, ‘Hey, we should do it here or there.’ We were flying to Saudi Arabia, and I was actually sleeping when one of the producers came up to me like, ‘Hey, we’re going to film this right now.’ They filmed it on a cell phone—me winning the championship on the tarmac and then losing it in my sleep.
The day I won and lost it on a golf course, we had just landed for a live event, and I got a text from Adam Peerce saying, ‘Hey, we’ve got to go to this golf course to film this 24/7 skit right before the show.’ It was just spur-of-the-moment. It was a fun time, a fun experience.”
Continuing, Mahal added that while it was a dip in morale at first given that he held the WWE Championship in 2017, he looked to make the best of it. Additionally, Mahal added that without the title The Singh Brothers would never have held a title in the company:
“My favorite one was looking for R-Truth backstage, and he hides in a trunk—one of those road cases—and then gets shipped to the next city. That was quite fun filming backstage. Originally, I was a little let down because it was after I was WWE Champion, and I wasn’t really doing much. Then I thought, ‘You know what? I’m going to make the best of it, make memorable moments, and have fun,’ and that’s exactly what we did. It ended up being pretty cool, especially with R-Truth.”
“A lot of people got to hold a championship in WWE because of that 24/7 Championship. For instance, the Singh Brothers—forever in history, they are champions in WWE because of that title. It gave a lot of guys something to do, something to remember, and it gave the fans something to remember for a long time. I think it was very cool.”
