Former WWE Superstar Matt Riddle has recently revealed that he was originally scheduled to win another major match.
Riddle had previously stated that he was at one point supposed to win the 2022 Royal Rumble, but this was changed when Brock Lesnar allegedly went into business for himself and decided that he would be winning the match.
While the former United States Champion was denied his big win in January, he was granted another opportunity later in the year at Money in the Bank. One of the originally announced entrants, Riddle has stated that once again he was scheduled to win the big match but was denied due to a last-minute change.
Appearing at Signed by Superstars, Riddle has stated that he was at on point planned to win the match but things were changed on the day due to the inclusion of Austin Theory, who would go on to win the match:
“Wanna hear something else cool? I was supposed to win Money in the Bank but Vince (McMahon) really likes Austin Theory and literally hours before, they changed it and Austin was added in and threw me off the ladder. After I took two huge ladder bumps off the RKO and everything else and it’s like… But, I love Austin Theory and I’m happy for him. Keep killing it bro.”‘
Theory’s time with the briefcase is regarded as one of the worst in company history. Never posing a serious threat to World Champion, Theory unsuccessfully cashed in his opportunity on Seth Rollins, who was reigning as United States Champion at the time.
Former WWE Superstar Matt Riddle Discusses Possible AEW Appearances
With his 90-day no-compete now expired, Riddle is free to appear for any promotion. In the first week of 2024, the former Tag Team Champion competed for MLW and made an appearance via video for New Japan. With NJPW and AEW having a close relationship, Matt Riddle was asked if an appearance for AEW is likely in the near future.
