Eric Bischoff has revealed the details of a heart-warming exchange he had with Cody Rhodes when the American Nightmare left WWE in 2016.
On February 15th it was confirmed that Cody and Brandi Rhodes had left AEW. The couple had been with the company since it’s inception in 2019, and both held positions backstage with the promotion as well as appearing on camera.
It has since been reported that Cody Rhodes could be heading back to WWE where he began his career. It has been suggested that the former Intercontinental Champion could be working with the company within a matter of days. However, it appears that his wife Brandi will not be joining him.
Rhodes left WWE in 2016 after becoming frustrated at his role within the company, and the creative direction of his character.
Speaking on the latest episode of his 83 Weeks podcast, Eric Bischoff explained that he wasn’t overly surprised that Rhodes had left AEW, commenting that he was more shocked when he left WWE six years previously.
“I’m not surprised, not nearly as surprised as everyone else is,” Bischoff said. “And it’s not because I have any inside information, it’s not because I spoke to Cody. Cody and I text back and forth every couple of months. I was more surprised that Cody left WWE.
You’re 30 years old, on the biggest stage in the world in your particular industry and yeah, you might be saddled with a character or gimmick that you don’t particularly like but you’re making damn good money. You could probably retire in 5-10 years if you were smart, or less. But he was willing to walk away from that because he wasn’t satisfied.”
Bischoff went on to recall that he spoke to Rhodes after his departure from WWE, revealing that he told the American Nightmare how proud his father, Dusty Rhodes, would be of him.
“Reminded me of his dad, I sent Cody when the news hit that he left WWE, I sent Cody a text telling him how proud I was of him and subsequently Cody called me and I remember I was in Los Angeles and it was the end of the day and we spoke briefly about it and I said ‘Cody, your dad would be so proud of you.’
Dusty was a lot like that, he was never satisfied, he always wanted something bigger and something more and he believed in himself and Dusty was willing to walk away if need be. When I heard that Cody left WWE, we had that conversation and I just told him how proud I was.”
The former WCW President explained that he admires Rhodes for taking the decision to leave AEW, as he knew he would come in for significant criticism over the decision. Bischoff said that he was proud of the former TNT Champion for putting his family first, and doing what he thinks is right.
At time of writing there has been no official confirmation that Cody Rhodes has signed with WWE, although he was referenced numerous times during the most recent episode of Monday Night Raw.
