Elias has revealed in a recent interview that he was originally meant to face The Undertaker at Super Showdown last year instead of Goldberg.
Speaking to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, ‘The Drifter’ spoke about the original match plans for him at both Super Showdown 2019 and WrestleMania 36, where he states he was supposed to face The Undertaker and John Cena respectively in singles matches on each show.
These matches would have built from Elias’ previous confrontations with both Superstars at WrestleMania 34 & 35 as well as the RAW following WrestleMania 35:
“New Orleans, I’m in the mix with John and the Undertaker. The next year, I’m in there with John and the Undertaker again—John at WrestleMania, the Undertaker the night next on Raw. I was supposed to go on and face the Undertaker at the show in Saudi Arabia. That never ended up happening because of Goldberg, but that was supposed to be my match.
The year after was supposed to be myself against John Cena at WrestleMania in a three-year running story. Things obviously changed and that didn’t end up happening.”
Plans changed for both shows, however: At Super Showdown, Elias outlasted 49 other Superstars in the 51-Man Battle Royal before being eliminated by Mansoor whilst The Undertaker defeated Goldberg in the main event of the show. At WrestleMania 36 meanwhile, Elias defeated King Corbin in the early goings of night 1 whilst John Cena fell to ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Funhouse match during night 2 of the event.
In the same interview, Elias also spoke about his recent WWE return following his pectoral muscle injury six months ago; his new album ‘Universal Truth’; being booed ‘into oblivion’ alongside Kevin Owens on RAW in Seattle two years ago and more!
