‘The Rated-R Superstar’ Edge has fuelled speculation that he may challenge NXT UK Champion, WALTER, at WrestleMania 37.
When the former WWE Champion won the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match on January 31, he spent the entirety of the following week appearing across all three of the company’s main brands teasing potential matches against Drew McIntyre, Finn Balor and Roman Reigns. However, there was one glaring omission.
While NXT UK is a diamond in the rough and a secret to most people, the brand’s champion, WALTER, is in fact one of the longest reigning champions in the modern era of professional wrestling and on February 19, 2021, will become the longest reigning NXT UK Champion in history when he tops Pete Dunne’s reign of 685 days.
However, WALTER seemingly wasn’t part of Edge’s plans heading into the WrestleMania season until February 9 when the number one contender took to Instagram to tease a potential bout with ‘The Austrian Anomaly.’
After posting a photo of the three ‘main’ heavyweight titles under consideration, Edge was questioned by a fan who called his eventual decision predictable after news broke of him expected to face Roman Reigns. In reply to the devotee who clearly yearns for something different, Edge wrote:
“You’re right. I have made it obvious it’s gonna be WALTER haven’t I?”
Following hitting the ‘post’ button, Edge lit up the internet as his comment spurred hundreds of fans to pitch in with how much they’d love to see the two clash over one of the most prestigious pieces of gold in the company today.
The NXT UK Championship, formerly the WWE United Kingdom Championship, has only has three holders since its inception in January 2017 and produced some of the greatest matches in the company in the modern era of professional wrestling.
