Eddie Kingston Wanted To Revive Controversial Angle In Chris Jericho Rivalry, Tony Khan Refused

Eddie Kingston wanted to push the boundaries as far as possible in his rivalry with Chris Jericho.

First crossing paths at AEW Revolution 2022 in a straight-up singles match, Kingston picked up the victory over the former World Champion and demanded that Jericho shake his hand, which the veteran refused. In what turned out to be the beginning of their rivalry, Kingston would go to war with Jericho and the rest of the Jericho Appreciation Society in the Anarchy in the Arena match and the Blood and Guts before ending their rivalry in a barbed wire deathmatch.

Although Kingston tried to set Jericho on fire and throw him off the top of the Blood and Guts cage for a second consecutive year, one spot was proven to be too hot for TV.

During the 1989 feud between Ric Flair and Terry Funk, The Hardcore Legend attacked The Nature Boy at Clash of the Champions VIII and placed a plastic bag over Flair’s face, suffocating the legend and creating a lot of backlash from the TBS executives over fears that the spot would be recreated at home. Recalling the rivalry while being interviewed for The Ringer, Kingston looked to pay homage to his hero by recreating the angle in his Jericho feud, but was shot down multiple times by Tony Khan:

“Trust me, I know how Turner is scared about that because I’ve asked about the plastic bag several times,” Kingston shares, reflecting on the creative process in AEW (which airs on two Turner stations, TBS and TNT) during his 2022 feud with Chris Jericho. “It was always walking in and Tony [Khan] going, ‘We’re not doing the plastic bag.’”

Eddie Kingston Continues Road To Recovery

Competing at a New Japan show, Kingston fell from the ring and landed badly on the guardrail on the outside. With many suspecting an injury immediately, the former Continental Champion later revealed that he had suffered a torn ACL and fractured tibia in the match and would be out until spring 2025. In a recent update, Eddie Kingston has undergone successful surgery and has begun his rehab and recovery.

In other AEW news, Chris Jericho revealed he suffered an injury in his recent match on Dynamite.
