A recent revelation from ECW legend Sabu has shed light on a significant match between him and Rey Mysterio at ECW One Night Stand in 2006 that almost never came to fruition due to Vince McMahon‘s apprehensions.
Rey Mysterio’s wrestling career took him through ECW and WCW before making his mark in WWE. His impressive performances in the Paul Heyman-led ECW and his pivotal role in redefining cruiserweight wrestling in North America set the stage for his eventual ascension to the top of the wrestling world.
By the time ECW One Night Stand 2006 arrived, Mysterio had established himself as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion and was set to face off against ECW legend Sabu in an Extreme Rules Match for the title.
In a recent interview with Steve Fall for WrestlingNews.Co, Sabu disclosed that the planned match between him and Mysterio was almost derailed due to Vince McMahon’s reservations. Sabu revealed that the match was intended to end in a no contest, but McMahon, unbeknownst to him, expressed concerns about Sabu being “too dangerous” to wrestle Mysterio.
It was supposed to be a no contest someway…double count out, double knockout, both can’t continue. It was my idea for the spot. They planned it for that and then Vince said behind my back that I was too dangerous and he didn’t want me to wrestle Mysterio.
During the interview, Sabu did not mince words in expressing his sentiments about McMahon, labelling him as a “scumbag.” Additionally, he directed criticism at John Laurinaitis.
Which ECW Legend Had An Awful Introduction To Curt Hennig?
Mikey Whipwreck, who wrestled for WCW briefly in 1999, spoke about how Curt Hennig “blew him off” during their first meeting. Following Whipwreck’s match in WCW Hennig came up to him and gave him a proper introduction which made Whipwreck feel better about the situation.
