Despite WrestleMania 39 being a number of months away in the distance, speculation around the makeup of the card has already begun to gather pace. Not for the first time, a lot of that speculation revolves around the potential participation of Dwayne Johnson.
Although Johnson hasn’t wrestled a match of any note since WrestleMania XXIX in 2013, he has continually been linked with a comeback for the fabled ‘one more match.’ It was believed that this could be at WrestleMania 38, but attention quickly shifted to the following year in California.
With Roman Reigns sitting at the top of the WWE mountain, it has long been suggested that a showdown between the Tribal Chief and his cousin, The Rock, at WrestleMania 39 is inevitable. A regular sticking point regarding a WWE return has been Johnson’s notoriously hectic filming schedule.
Brian Gewirtz Gives Update On Dwayne Johnson’s Schedule
During a recent interview with NBC Sports Boston, long-time collaborator Brian Gewirtz commented on the possibility of Dwayne Johnson getting back in the ring one more time. Gewirtz said that while as a fan he would love to see the star appear at WrestleMania 39, he has no idea whether it will actually happen.
The former WWE writer added that while it’s correct that Johnson isn’t filming in February, he is working on a number of other projects such as the XFL.
“I have no idea, and I really don’t. All I know is, if and when Rock, Dwayne, comes back to WWE… the bar he always sets, and wrote about it in the book, you see it in all of his projects, you know, Black Adam. The expectation level is so high, and the audiences first mentality that is very, very real, it needs to match it. It needs to be something gigantic. Something that’s not just like, ‘oh that’s a nice traction, or oh that’s a main event in any arena across the country,’ kind of thing. Truly meaningful and impactful, you know, ground-shaking, paradigm-shifting, gigantic.
Whether or not that manifests itself in a WrestleMania main event, the fan in me would love to see it if it’s the right circumstance and everything, but I don’t know. He’s certainly got a lot of stuff going on between this gigantic movie coming out, our Tales from the Territories show now…
‘Oh he’s not doing anything in February,’ I saw that on the internet at one point. ‘Oh The Rock’s not shooting any movies in February.’ Like no, I don’t know whether he is or not, but he is launching, with Dany, a gigantic football league. So that might take some time too, because Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, no one at Seven Bucks, is of the ilk of ‘Alight, stamp my name on it. We’re not Krusty the Clown, put our face on it and our logo on it and let us know how it does.’
We’ll see what happens. Whatever happens, it’ll happen for a reason.”
