Actor Brendan Fraser has recently shared his experience of working with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on the set of the 2001 blockbuster film, The Mummy Returns.
In an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show, Fraser revealed that he never actually met Dwayne Johnson during filming as most of his scenes in the movie were as a CGI scorpion/human hybrid. Fraser said in the interview:
“Dwayne Johnson was just a piece of tape on a stick.”
Drew Barrymore, who has appeared in several notable movies throughout her career, included classics such as E.T. and Scream, noted that she couldn’t act that way, saying:
“If I had to act to a tennis ball I would fail miserably”
The Mummy Returns Helped Launch Dwayne Johnson Into Hollywood
The Mummy Returns was a huge success for Dwayne Johnson and even led to his own spin-off film, The Scorpion King, which was released in 2002. Following the success of those films, Johnson became a sought after commodity in Hollywood and the films served as a springboard for his hugely successful movie career in the two decades since.
Fraser, who is currently being tipped for an Oscar for his performance in the film The Whale, also revealed in an interview with Deadline that he would be open to appearing in a new Mummy film.
“I’m not opposed to it. I don’t think I’ve been this famous and unsalaried at the same time in my professional life, so sign me up! We’ve all got to start somewhere.”
The Mummy franchise has already been rebooted once before in 2017, with Tom Cruise as the lead, but it did not receive positive reception from audiences or critics. Fraser suggested in an interview with Variety that the lack of “fun” in the 2017 reboot may have been a contributing factor to its poor reception.
“The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. The Mummy should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”
Dwayne Johnson may or not be preparing for a stunning WWE comeback, but fans have certainly begun to believe The Great One will be back in action soon.
