In addition to conquering the world of professional wrestling and taking Hollywood by storm as the biggest box office earner in the world, Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to the world of business.
Not only has he been enormously successful with his Teremana tequila and Zoa energy drink ventures, he and business partner Dany Garcia also purchased the XFL from Vince McMahon after the company was near bankruptcy due largely in part to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Therefore, it’s unsurprising that the world of wrestling is clamoring for his opinion after Vince McMahon shockingly returned to the company this month in order to facilitate a sale of WWE. The now-reinstated Chairman of the Board retired last July amidst an investigation into alleged sexual misconduct and hush money payments, but announced on January 5th that he would be appointing himself back to the Board of Directors.
Days after his return, his daughter Stephanie McMahon resigned from the company, and soon after news of her resignation became public, Vince was unanimously elected Executive Chairman of the Board.
Rumors swirled on the night of January 10th that a deal to sell the sports entertainment giant to the Saudi Investment Fund had already been finalized, but at this time there is no deal in place. Potential buyers include not only the Saudi Investment Fund but also Comcast, Endeavour, and AEW owners Shahid and Tony Khan.
Dwayne Johnson Believes Any Potential Purchasers Of WWE Must Have A Passion For Wrestling
Speaking in an interview with CNBC’s Squawk on the Street, Dwayne ‘The Rock‘ Johnson commented on the idea of WWE being sold, saying that he believes any potential buyers would need to have the same passion for professional wrestling that the current regime does.
“The fan base is very large and very passionate and there’s nothing like the WWE. So, I think with the new owners, if there are new owners, and acquirers that are gonna come in, I think they have to share that same passion for the company and for the world of pro wrestling which isn’t always easy to do.” (h/t Sportskeeda)
The Rock’s comments don’t indicate that he himself is interested in buying the company, but he does admit that he always has the mentality of being able to add more to his plate if the situation is right.
“I used to have this mentality … that, ‘Well, my plate is full. However, I’m going to make room for [more]’ — and I would find a way to do that.” (h/t CNBC)
However, he does admit that this mentality can lead to imbalance in life, something he’s working to combat.
“In many ways, I was forcing a lot of the things throughout the years that caused somewhat of an imbalance.”
While many fans were hoping that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson would finally come back to WWE in order to take on family member Roman Reigns at the upcoming WrestleMania in Los Angeles, CA, those plans are currently in doubt.
