Drew McIntyre Challenges Roman Reigns For UK Stadium Show

Drew McIntyre

Drew McIntyre says he is on a collision course with Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns ahead of a potential showdown in the UK in September.

On September 3rd, WWE will return to the United Kingdom for the company’s biggest show in Europe in three decades. On that occasion, Wembley Stadium in England played host to SummerSlam 1992 and was headlined by one of the most famous matches in WWE history.

On that August night in London, the British Bulldog defeated Bret Hart to claim the Intercontinental Championship.

Now that the show at Wales’ Principality Stadium has been confirmed for September, fans are wondering whether a British star will once again be standing tall in the main event. Should that scenario come to pass, many are tipping Drew McIntyre to be the returning hero.

After all the Scottish Warrior is a former two-time World Champion and occupies a spot in the upper echelons of WWE.

Following a new BT Sport interview featuring McIntyre, it appears that fans aren’t the only ones looking ahead to a huge match involving the SmackDown star. During the conversation, it was put to McIntyre that there had been a survey online about a potential opponent for him in Wales. The three stars named in the survey were Roman Reigns, Gunther and Tyson Fury.

When asked who he would like to face in September, McIntyre named Reigns without a moments hesitation.

“Roman. He’s the Champion. I’ve been away from the title for a long time. Roman’s been so dominant and is doing the best work of his career. We’re on a collision course. It is five months away. If somehow we could avoid each other for five months, that would be such a big match. Especially on the U.K. soil, I can’t imagine the atmosphere for that match.

“When it comes to Gunther, that’s been a match himself and myself have been talking about it for a long time. We’ve never had a big singles match. But for right now, I think it’s a case of ‘let’s educate the world on the big stage about who Gunther, formerly Walter, is.’ We know what he can do, most of the hardcore wrestling fans know what he can do, but let’s just get the general public familiar with him and see what he’s capable of. See how physical he is, and make them also want a match between Gunther and myself.”

With regard to a match with Fury, McIntyre reflected on the back and forth between the two on social media, admitting that it would be a huge match. However, his number one target remains Roman Reigns.

“He’s the one I’ve been talking the most about,” McIntyre said. “We’ve been taking digs at each other for over two years now. I’ve said it over and over, this is a match that will draw the attention of not just the WWE and wrestling fans, but of the general public. I can’t think of anything bigger, and being around the man I know how much he enjoys the WWE product. He has a real passion for WWE and entertainment. We can do some fun stuff. If it ends up Drew vs. Fury, I’d be good with that as well. But of course, I’ve got to pick the title [match vs. Reigns].”

After defeating Happy Corbin at WrestleMania 38, Drew McIntyre has become wrapped up in a feud with Sami Zayn. After the former Intercontinental Champion ran from his two previous match against the Scot, it has been announced that the two will meet in a Lumberjack Match on the April 22nd episode of SmackDown.
