Drew McIntyre has revealed the influence Paul Heyman has had on him during his career and how words from Heyman helped the Scotsman reach new heights in WWE.
McIntyre discusses the effect Heyman had on him in his new book A Chosen Destiny. According to the former WWE Champion, Heyman shared some words of wisdom before the Crown Jewel event in 2019.
“It was a lot of fun pulling together that match under their captaincy. Here’s where I’d like to thank Paul Heyman. Before our big tag match in the Crown Jewel show, he pulled me aside and said he had something he wanted to tell me. ‘You have a great personality, Drew,’ he said. ‘Show it off more!’ Coming from an arch-performer like Paul Heyman, I was going to take that to heart. It was a nudge that showed he had every confidence in me; I just had to have that little bit more confidence in myself. It was the little spark of encouragement from a master of the microphone that I needed to shrug off the last vestiges of shyness.”
“I went out there and I remember having so much fun in a way that I maybe hadn’t previously. I wasn’t involved in a significant story in the match, so if I was in there I was just going to do something signature and make sure I got some space on the camera because I wasn’t the focus. Bobby Lashley and Rusev had a silly storyline going on at the time – Lashley had taken Rusev’s wife – so they were kind of the one story in the match and I was just messing with everyone as they were trying to be serious, just as Flair was prompting me to do whatever I felt like. I was growing into being myself. The trigger was Paul Heyman’s suggestion I let my personality show a bit more.”
Drew McIntyre then explained how a chance opportunity to address a live audience began to turn heads of the upper echelons of WWE:
“Not long after that, I was due to appear in a non-televised cage match at the end of one of our TV events. The crew needed a bit longer to set up the cage, so they asked me to go out and work the crowd a little on the microphone. All in a day’s work. No problem. But then I went out there, and, man . . . I had so much fun with it. I was just myself, the real Drew. The Drew that I was back in the independents, the Drew that I was for most of my run in NXT. The Drew that I was when I rediscovered my love for the business.”
“I was making fun of the crowd, I was telling dumb jokes, the whole deal. Again – nothing extraordinary. I was buying time for the crew. But it’s what you make of it. I made it like I was having the time of my life. And I was. The crowd loved it, and so apparently did the people upstairs. The first thing I heard after I came backstage was, ‘Woah, that was something else. Okay, okay, we have to do that on television.’ And it just kind of snowballed from there.”
The Crown Jewel event took place in Saudi Arabia on the 31st of October, 2019. Less than three months after McIntyre competed on the event as part of Team Flair, he won the 2020 Royal Rumble. From there McIntyre captured his first WWE Championship in Sunday’s main event at WrestleMania 36.
Drew McIntyre also speaks in-depth about the Crown Jewel event and the strange circumstances surrounding the travel delay that followed.
