Drew McIntyre Recalls How He Earned Ric Flair’s Respect

Drew McIntyre & Ric Flair

Since returning to WWE in 2017, Drew McIntyre has established himself as one of the biggest stars in the company.

Drew McIntyre’s most recent WWE run began with him winning the NXT Championship shortly after returning and arguably peaked with a stunning defeat of Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 36. The Scotsman proceeded to hold the WWE Title for much of the ‘Pandemic Era’ earning acclaim for his performances across the board.

Off the back of his enormous success over the past calendar year, Drew McIntyre has now released a book charting his life and career to date. While detailing his rise to WWE’s summit in ‘A Chosen Destiny,’ The Scottish Warrior, a noted ‘student of the game,’ recalled earning the respect of ‘the dirtiest player in the game,’ Ric Flair.

“I love hearing them reminisce. You get to hear every detail of every story – which, in the case of Flair, sometimes you don’t want to hear! I knew I would glean a lot of in-ring knowledge from working with the pair of them, but I really liked hearing about the way things used to be. The more they talked to me, the more they realised that I’m a bit of a WWE historian of their era. Flair said he wouldn’t like to take my Claymore and I said, ‘Are you kidding me? After Bruiser Brody beat you up how many times?’ Bruiser Brody, with his bushy beard and staring eyes, was known for roughing everybody up back in the day. I walked away and never thought anything of it, but that caught Flair’s attention. He has since said I earned his respect in that exchange because I really know my WWE history”

Elsewhere in the book, McIntyre also lifts the lid on the now infamous plane delay in Saudi Arabia after WWE Crown Jewel in 2019. The incident saw the place carrying WWE personnel and Superstars grounded at the airport in a haze of conspiracy theories and confusion. Recalling the controversy, McIntyre described the incident as “weird, and a bit scary.”

At the event itself McIntyre appeared on Team Flair in a ten man tag team match against Team Hogan.
